Have you heard that the first impression is what counts? The purpose of this painting is to represent human identity, by showing an overweigh man instead of a guy with a fit body to see how that changes the reaction of the audience. My inspiration for this work came from "Son of a man" By Rene Magritte.

Artist Inspiration
I used the "Son of a man" as my inspiration for the theme of identity. I wanted to paint something that represented self-identity but I didn't wanted to use the apple or a man without a face because I feel that now in day people are not represented By features or the way they dress, now is the body that counts. I believe that most of the people from my generation think that being overweight is ugly or that people that are over weight are like that because they want to, so in this painting I want to paint something that was " disturbing" to the viewer since some people feel different or better than a person that is overweight.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Son_of_Man#/media/ File:Magritte_TheSonOfMan.jpg Background information: The Son of Man is a Belgian surrealist painting. It was painted in 1964 by René Magritte. The painting was originally intended to be a self-portrait. The painting conveys a man in an overcoat wearing a bowler hat and standing in front of a short wall. Behind this short wall are a cloudy sky and the sea. You cannot see the face of the man, since it is largely obscured by a floating green apple. However, you can see the eyes of the man as they are peeking over the edge of the apple. If you are keen enough when looking at the painting, you will notice that the left arm seems to be bending backwards at the elbow. Magritte said that the painting just shows us about humanity. He says that everything we see hides some other thing yet we still want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is always some sort of interest in what is hidden and what the visible does not show us. This brings about some sort of conflict between the visible that is present and the visible that is hidden. http://totallyhistory.com/the-son-of-man/ |
Process
One of the hardest thing that I had to do for this piece was the mixing the background colors. The green and grey are two different color which changes the tone of the painting on each side. I mad to mix Back and white to get the color grey, but for the other side I had to use more black then green because the green that I was using at the moment was too light and it did not mixed well with the dark grey. I also used dark color to cover all the imperfection of my piece. with the use of dark color I was able to eliminate or covered some of my mistakes while creating this piece.

Reflection
At the beginning of this project the theme was not one of my major priorities. I felt that my priorities should be focus on the color that I was going to chose to paint this man because with the use of color I was going to get the attention of the viewers. I first painted the man using skin tone colors to represent humanity in its natural way. I think that I did a great job painting the male first because while painting it I made a lot of mistake that later on I was able to fix with the dark back ground colors. Blending the background colors was not as easy as looks due to the fact that I had to uses a lot f back because the color were too light and it didn't blend in as well I wanted it. but I ended up with the results that I was looking for.
